Lead Work in Market Bosworth: what to know

The roofs we work on in Market Bosworth

• Market-town brick and clay tile (The Market Place and streets of Market Bosworth’s conservation area): The council’s appraisal, adopted in 2014 with its own roof survey, records red brick as the main walling and clay tiles and slate as the commonest roofs, with plain tiles on the Market Place rows. Plain clay tiles can be matched from reclaimed stock, and small repairs done tile by tile.
• Village cottages (Sutton Cheney, Shackerstone, Congerstone and Stoke Golding): Reddish-brick cottages under clay tile with oversailing eaves in Sutton Cheney, steep gables of clay tile or slate in Shackerstone, and a Swithland slate roof at The Limes in Stoke Golding. Keeping each village’s roofline and materials is the priority in any repair.
• Twentieth-century village homes (Barlestone, Carlton and the newer edges of the larger villages): Postwar and later houses with concrete or clay tiles, flat-roofed garages and uPVC roofline. The work here is mostly straightforward maintenance and, on the oldest, re-roofing.

Planning and permission in Market Bosworth

Market Bosworth and its villages fall within Hinckley and Bosworth Borough, which has conservation areas at Market Bosworth (declared in 1974), Shackerstone, Congerstone, Sutton Cheney, Stoke Golding, Shenton, Cadeby and Osbaston, and along the Ashby Canal. The borough says it has no Article 4 directions in its conservation areas, so re-roofing an ordinary unlisted home in matching materials rarely needs consent. Bosworth Hall (Grade II*) and the church of St Peter are among the listed buildings where any change of character needs consent.
