How long does a tiled roof last?
Concrete tiles typically last 40–60 years, clay tiles 60+ years, and natural slate can exceed 100 years when well maintained. The underlay and fixings usually need attention sooner than the tiles themselves.
What is a dry ridge system?
A dry ridge mechanically fixes ridge tiles with clamps and screws instead of mortar. It meets the current BS 5534 standard, resists storms, and will not crack or wash out like old mortar bedding.
Can you match my existing tiles?
In most cases yes. We source matching or sympathetic tiles, including reclaimed Welsh slate and clay plain tiles, so repairs and extensions blend in.
Can you match Welsh slate on a Hugglescote terrace?
Yes. The mining-era terraces in Hugglescote, Ellistown and central Coalville were roofed in Welsh slate, and reclaimed slate in the same sizes is still readily available, so a repair or partial re-cover can be blended into the original. For a full re-roof, new Welsh slate or a good-quality Spanish slate gives the same look with a century of life ahead of it.
Dry ridge or traditional re-bedding — which do you recommend?
Dry ridge, in most cases. A mechanically fixed dry ridge system is the better choice from a future-maintenance point of view — no mortar to crack, work loose in storms or need re-bedding every few years. Traditional pointing is still used where a particular roof calls for it, such as a listed building or a conservation-area property.
Is Bardon Hill exposure a problem for ridge tiles?
It can be. Coalville sits on high ground on the edge of Charnwood Forest beneath Bardon Hill, the highest point in Leicestershire, and roofs on the estates at Bardon, Agar Nook and Greenhill take the wind head-on. Mortar-bedded ridges are the first casualty. A dry-fix ridge and verge system to BS 5534 is mechanically fixed, so it stays put in a gale — it is what we recommend on exposed slopes.
What proof do I get that ridge and tile work is sound?
A written invoice describing the work, and photographs if you want them — as a CAA-registered drone operator, Westley can photograph the finished ridges, hips and valleys from the air so you see them up close without leaving the ground.
