Lead Work & Flashing
Lead is used at the trickiest, most leak-prone parts of a roof — chimneys, valleys, abutments where roof meets wall, and bay-window roofs.
Learn more →Chimneys are one of the most common sources of roof leaks because they sit proud of the roof and take the full force of the weather. We repair and repoint chimney brickwork, renew the flaunching and pots, and replace the lead flashing where the chimney meets the roof — the joint that most often lets water in.
Small chimney repairs — pointing, flaunching or a new lead flashing — start from around £150; a full repoint (including flaunching) commonly ranges £350–£800 depending on access and scope. Rebuilds are quoted individually. Free fixed quote. See full price ranges for every job →
Spotting these early usually means a smaller, cheaper job. If any sound familiar, it's worth getting the roof looked at.
A straightforward, no-pressure process from first call to finished job.
The most common cause is failed lead flashing at the base of the stack, followed by cracked flaunching around the pots and porous, unpointed brickwork. We find which it is rather than guessing.
If the stack is sound, repointing and re-flashing keeps it watertight and preserves the look. If it is unstable or you want to simplify the roof, we can remove it and cap the roof neatly. We will advise on cost and impact.
Flaunching is the sloped mortar bed that holds the chimney pots in place and sheds water off the top of the stack. When it cracks, water gets in, so renewing it is a common part of chimney maintenance.
When the masonry has become badly loose and the stack is no longer safe, rebuilding the top is the right call. Otherwise, careful repointing restores the chimney without the cost of a rebuild — and we will tell you honestly which yours needs.
Chimney repairs happen where you cannot see them, which is exactly where a drone earns its keep. As a CAA-registered drone operator, Westley can photograph the finished stack, flaunching and flashing from the air, so you get close-up images of work you would otherwise have to take on trust.
Very. Almost every mining-era terrace in Hugglescote, Ellistown, Whitwick and Ibstock carries tall shared brick stacks that have taken a century of frost and coal-fire heat, so repointing, fresh flaunching and new lead flashings are among the commonest needs on LE67 roofs — and on the older streets of Ashby, Shepshed and Loughborough too.
We provide chimney repairs and repointing across Coalville and North West Leicestershire. Choose your town for local detail:
