• Glenfield village houses (Glenfield’s conservation area around Main Street and Church Road): The appraisal names Welsh slate as the traditional covering, with Swithland slate on a few older buildings such as nos 3–9 Main Street, and red clay pantiles at Old Glebe Farm. Matching the right material is the first job on any repair here.
• Council estates of the 1920s to 1950s (Braunstone and New Parks, now in Leicester City, and the Faire estate in Glenfield): Leicester built council housing at Braunstone from 1925 to 1940 and around 3,000 homes at New Parks between 1946 and 1959. Roofs of that age still on their original coverings are overdue for new underlay, battens and ridge fixings, and the chimneys need checking.

Planning and permission in Glenfield & Braunstone

LE3 straddles two councils. Glenfield, Braunstone Town and Leicester Forest East are Blaby District Council’s, while Braunstone Park and Rowley Fields, New Parks and Western Park belong to Leicester City Council. Glenfield has a conservation area with an appraisal from 2014, and Braunstone Village has one in two parts: the city designated the northern part in 1974 and Blaby the southern part in 2024. An Article 4 direction in force since March 2026 covers 19 properties in Braunstone Village and brings roof alterations and changes of roofing material under planning control.
